Ceiling fans are great at boosting the airflow of your air-conditioner. They don't cost much, and with light maintenance, they can last a long time. Regular cleaning is important. Dust collects on the blades and the motor housing. A dust cloth and vacuum will help clear it away. Turn the fan off before starting. If the vacuum can't remove the dust, try blowing it out. It's messy, but it might be the only way to get the dust out. Many fans are self-oiling, but others can take a squirt of lightweight lubricant on the motor shaft. Check your owner's manual.
If the fan is wobbly or makes noises, make sure the screws holding the blades are tightened. If that doesn't stop the racket, remove the blades and weigh them. Each blade should weigh the same. If one is light, try adding a small weight, like a dime. Tape the dime to the top of the blade. If you have glass lamps on your fan, make sure all the globes are held in place tightly. Some even have rubber bands that fit between the glass and the screws to quiet them. This occasional tune-up should keep you cool for years to come.
