Paint Finishes Demystified
(Adapted The Arizona Republic Article by Sadie Jo Smokey)

Too shiny, too flat, or somewhere in between. When deciding on a paint finish, it often comes down to where the paint is going to be used. Whatever brand of paint you choose, finishes are virtually the same. Here's a handy paint-finish primer. It won't help you decide on a color, but it can help you choose an appropriate sheen.

FLAT
Absorbs light and hides many surface imperfections. It appears matte. Most flat paints don't stand up to cleaning, and scrubbing a scuff mark on the wall may leave a shiny spot. This finish is best in rooms that don't see a lot of activity, such as guest bedrooms and formal dining rooms.

EGGSHELL
Hides imperfections, is smother than flat finish, and reflects more light. It washes well but may be too similar to flat paint. This finish is good for hallways and bedrooms.

SATIN
A silky finish that is easily cleaned but can be too glossy. The shine can draw attention to wall imperfections. It's great for busy rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms, and family rooms.

SEMI-GLOSS
Takes abuse from heat and water and is washable. This finish is great for kitchens and bathrooms, but it can be too shiny for large rooms. It works well on trim, doors, and cabinets.

GLOSS
Very shiny and makes colors seem brighter. Things can stick to the surface, for example, a vase to a windowsill or books to a bookshelf. It is easy to clean and a good choice for utility rooms, playrooms, doors, and trim.
